For one, you want to make sure that you find yourself a good scale. You don’t need the best bathroom scale that money can buy, but it’s best if you can find a digital scale and make sure that it is set on a very even surface. Tiled or carpeted floors usually don’t give the most accurate readings. The next thing you need to make sure of is that you are weighing yourself at the right time and in the right way. Here is when you should weigh yourself to get an accurate weight.
In the Morning
The morning is usually the best time to weigh yourself, after you’ve had a chance to relieve yourself. At this point you should have fully digested your food from the night before and you shouldn’t be holding any water weight. This will certainly fluctuate in accordance with hormonal changes and the amount of salt and starch you’ve recently consumed, and even the weather. So, you don’t want to try and draw too many direct conclusions about the sources of these fluctuations. There are a lot of factors, and both exercise and dietary habits garner long-term results, so you can’t expect fluctuations to be driven by immediate actions.
While weighing yourself in the morning tends to give the most accurate results, it’s not necessarily the only time to step on the scale. In general, you want to be weighing yourself at the same time every time. Some people prefer to weigh themselves every day, but if this is causing too much anxiety, or if it is affecting you emotionally in a very serious way, then it definitely isn’t good for you. A lot of experts believe that weighing yourself once per week is a healthier and accurate way to measure your progress when you are setting very specific fitness goals for yourself.
It’s important that you are always using the same scale to measure yourself. There will be different results from different scales and these small fluctuations can be both misleading and distracting. If you like to weigh yourself at the gym where you can get a body fat assessment, then that should be the only scale that you use. This can make it more difficult to always measure at the same time of day, but then again, it could be better motivation to be very consistent with your workouts.
Finally, you always want to measure yourself in the same type of clothes. If you measure yourself wearing a t-shirt, jeans and sneakers one day, and then your gym clothes the next, you are only going to be confusing yourself. So make sure you keep all of the conditions of your weight measurement as consistent as possible.
